simGPS is now a legacy application and is no longer being developed or the code base updated. It works with Windows 7 through to and including Windows 10. It is not known whether it works with Windows 11.
If you are using it and experiencing issues do get in touch and I’ll try to assist.
Documentation
All documentation is contained within the online Windows Help system provided with the application. However, for legacy support reasons the documentation is additionally now also available as a standalone set of html files which are available for download below.
Unzip the downloaded file into an empty folder. That folder will contain many .html files and a sub-folder containing images. Using a web-browser view the file named index.html. This will display a very basic menu through which the documentation is accessed. This is method is a workaround only so that the documentation remains availabe when the application can no longer be run. It looks much nicer in the Windows Help system!
Release History
V2.0, 20-Mar-2013
First full release of simGPS V2. It contains the ability to configure the following NMEA 0183 parameters via a ‘settings’ dialog:
- Position
- Number of satellites
- Horizontal dilution of position
- Mean Sea Level
- Height above Mean Sea Level
- Ground Speed
- Track angle
- Magnetic variation.
To accomodate the above parameters the ‘settings’ dialog has been converted to a ‘tabbed’ style.
The online help system has been updated to reflect the enhanced NMEA 0183 capabilities.
V2.0, Beta 5, 10-Mar-2013
Enhancement to include two additional NMEA 0183 Sentences (GPGGA & GPGLL) in the GPS simulation data. GPGGA (GPS Fix Data) allows the height above sea level to be specified. To support this capability two additional fields have been added to the ‘Settings’ dialog. The online help has been updated to reflect the changes.
V2.0, Beta 4, 26-Feb-2013
Documentation change only. It incorrectly stated that the serial cable needed to be of the straight-through type. The serial cable must be a crossed or null modem cable.
V2.0, Beta 3, 24-Feb-2013
Minor change to the format of the Latitude and Longitude information encoded into the RMC NMEA sentence. Although the original encoding worked with the DMU-2000 it was found to be incompatible with APRS application APRSIS/32.
V2.0, Beta 2, 23-Feb-2013
Support added to enable GPS simulation to automatically commence when simGPS is started. See the online help for details.
v2.0, Beta 1, 6-Feb-2013
First release
V1 series
Prior to V2 a V1 series fulfilled the same purpose but was not as configurable. V1 was also a Windows command-line only application.
