Software – simGPS

Overview

simGPS is a Windows application that simulates a GPS receiver, sending position and time information to any RS-232 connected device using the NMEA 0183 standard.

Version 2 was released in 2013 for Windows XP (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit) and works with Windows 8 and Windows 10. It is not known whether it is compatible with Windows 11.

simGPS is available to download using the link in the Download section below.

Description

The Yaesu DMU-2000 may be configured to receive time and position information from a GPS receiver connected using its RS-232 interface which it identifies as ‘COM’. The DMU-2000 is not designed to be ‘portable’ and thus will, when used, inevitably be in a single position/location. Dedicating a GPS receiver to this function by tethering it to a DMU-2000 in such a scenario is wasteful.

simGPS simulates a GPS receiver and will send time and position information using the NMEA 0183 standard to a DMU-2000 or any other RS-232 connected device thus removing the need for a dedicated GPS receiver.

When running, simGPS has the effect of synchronising DMU-2000 time to computer time (great if your DMU clock runs fast/slow). simGPS also sends positional information making the configuration of the DMU-2000 much easier.

The following NMEA parameters may be configured via a ‘settings’ dialog:

  • Position
  • Number of satellites
  • Horizontal dilution of position
  • Mean Sea Level
  • Height above Mean Sea Level
  • Ground Speed
  • Track angle
  • Magnetic variation.
